RUB BBQ VEGAS

Making slow cooking stand out
in a fast town.

Client: RUB BBQ
Industry: Food service
Scope: Campaign strategy, creative development, out-of-home, launch activation
Focus: Promote the opening of RUB BBQ Vegas at the Rio hotel

Here's some of the work.

Here's the thinking behind the work.

The Opportunity: Find the advantage hiding in plain sight.

RUB had a real following in New York, built on barbecue that took hours to make. Las Vegas was the expansion, and Las Vegas is a city where every restaurant is louder than the one next door. Out-spending that noise was not an option for a smokehouse.

The advantage was already in the kitchen. RUB's slow-smoking method took time, and time is the one thing a city built on immediacy cannot manufacture. Every competitor could buy a bigger sign. None of them could claim patience.

That contradiction became the campaign.

Campaign Strategy: Fast Town. Slow Cooking.

The line worked because it was true and because it set RUB against the city rather than against other restaurants. In a place engineered for speed, slowness was the differentiator. It gave locals and tourists a reason to choose RUB that had nothing to do with volume.

The strategy also solved a practical problem. A slow-cooking claim needs proof, or it reads as marketing language. So the campaign was built to show the method rather than describe it.

Execution: Make the process the message.

Billboards and casino posters teased the method instead of the menu. A live smoke-cam streamed the smoking process in real time, turning food prep into something you could watch, which converted the claim into evidence. For the grand opening, the invitation was a package of wet naps, an unusual mailing that told you exactly what kind of meal was coming.

Each piece pointed at the same idea from a different angle. That is what makes a campaign hold together rather than a set of executions that happen to share a font.

Why it matters: The idea was already in the business.

RUB did not need a story invented for it. The strongest positioning was sitting in the method that made the food good in the first place. The work found it, sharpened it and built a campaign around it.

Purpose

To make patience the reason people choose RUB in a city that rewards moving fast.

Mission

To deliver barbecue worth slowing down for, in a place that never does.

Vision

To establish RUB as a destination known for quality, care and the best BBQ in town.

Positioning

The Las Vegas smokehouse that competes on method rather than spectacle, where the hours behind the food are the point.

Personality

Confident. Unhurried. Honest. Unpretentious.
A little contrarian.

Audience

Vegas locals looking for real food away from the resort machine, and visitors who have had enough of engineered experiences and want something made properly.

Fast Town, Slow Cooking gave RUB a reason to exist in Las Vegas that no competitor could copy or outspend. The campaign worked because the claim was already true in the kitchen. The work found it, proved it in public and made patience the most interesting thing on the strip.

Have something real already working? Let’s build the brand around it.
